The Sea Beauty |
In May 1947, a strange sight was seen off the western coast of the United States of America, Namora, cousin to the famed Prince Namor (the Sub-Mariner), appears to aid local fishermen being beset by evil forces trying to drive the fishermen from their local fishing grounds. Namora, like her cousin Namor, possesses unique abilities as the result of being born from a surface human and an underwater dweller. Combining the best of both worlds, Namora has extreme strength and durability; she is able to resist the pressures of the sea depths and can live in and out of water. In addition to this, she can also fly with tiny, but powerful wings on her ankles. With these fantastic powers, she helps all who are victimized by evil and tyranny. Comments For a female sidekick Namora did fairly well for herself. She got her own comic book, appearances in numerous other comics, and was part of the Atlas superhero revival in 1954. Undoubtedly, her relationship to the Sub-Mariner had something to do with this as did Timelys attempt to cash in on the female hero craze of the late 1940s. She made her first appearance in Marvel Mystery Comics #82 as Namors sidekick and cousin. She was created by Bill Everett, who did most of the art and writing for the Namora stories. Namora faded out of the Sub-Mariners continuity when he was revived in the Silver Age. She was revealed to have a daughter Namorita (introduced while Bill Everett was back on his old strip) who briefly served as the Sub-Mariners sidekick. She became a somewhat more important figure in the 1990s Namor series, but she was eventually killed off. |
